Pioneer Church Leadership Pathway

The Pioneer Church Leadership Pathway is a two-year programme for those called by God to lead church, whether as their primary life-work or while in other employment, and is designed to create a clear route to raise and release church leaders.

The programme is constructed to provide an understanding of Pioneer’s values, relational culture, and approach to ministry and church-planting, so is distinct from a purely theological training course. It involves ten days each year spent with a Community of Practice (cohort), plus additional time being mentored, carrying out signposted training, and in practical hands-on involvement in the local church.

Programme Details:
When: The course starts in September each year.
Cost: £80 per month over two years, plus a non-refundable £100 deposit on application to cover administration costs. These fees do not cover living costs, travel, conference tickets or additional course costs.
For more information: For further information, to request an application form, or to nominate a candidate, please email ac@pioneer.org.uk. You can also view more information on the Pioneer website.

Discernment and Application:
Pioneer Pathway’s main purpose is to assist individuals in discerning God’s will for their lives and to equip them to be effective leaders.

Initially, a candidate should meet with a local Pioneer church leader to explore the candidate’s sense of calling to church leadership. If there is agreement, then this local leader will nominate the candidate to the Leadership Development Director of Pioneer, to enter a discernment process. This will start with the candidate being sent an application form and reference requests. Following on from this, the candidate will meet with a Spiritual Director, in order to discern their call, and the timing of their call, to church leadership.

Candidates who are recommended by their local leadership, and who have confirmed their call to leadership through sessions with their Spiritual Director, will then be called to an assessment meeting by the Leadership Development Director.

Core Training:
The Pioneer Leadership Pathway’s core training consists of six modules which are designed to provide an overview of Pioneer’s theological, missional and relational distinctive. Students are expected to collate a portfolio of learning throughout the course, which they can then present at the end. The core training modules are as follows:

  • The Kingdom of God
  • Understanding our Story
  • Church Development
  • Personal and Spiritual Development
  • Supernatural Leadership
  • Mission

Formal Theological Training:
A number of recognised theological training programmes will be signposted, so that students can be fully equipped in understanding the Scriptures, to the equivalent of a diploma level. A student’s previous theological training will be taken into account.

Mentoring:
A mentor will be assigned to each student, in order to help guide them through the discernment process and the programme, and to help them process the learning.
