“All together worshipping Jesus, sharing the good news, and praying for the sick.”
7-11th June 2017; Houndwell Park, Southampton, SO14 1JY.
At the beginning of June, churches across Southampton are getting together to hold ‘Church in the Park’, a free, five-day, public event in the city centre. Have you signed up to get involved yet?
This five-day event will combine live music, great testimonies and a powerful message, enabling us to share the good news about Jesus with the people of Southampton. The event will be run from a marquee in Houndwell Park, with meetings being run from there each day, and teams will also go out onto the streets to chat to, and pray with, people. The event will finish on the Sunday with a morning service, followed by a picnic and baptisms in the park.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the churches in Southampton to work together to provide local people with the chance to hear about Jesus and experience church in an accessible way, taking the message of the Gospel to where the people are.
Schedule for the Week:
Each day, the Church in the Park team will gather at the marquee in the morning for a time of worship and prayer, before going out onto the streets of the city to chat to people, do questionnaires, share the gospel, pray for the sick, and invite people to the afternoon meetings at the marquee. The afternoon meetings will all include live sung worship, testimonies, and a clear explanation of the Gospel, and will be ideal for people who aren’t used to going to church or who are new to the Christian faith. The afternoon meetings will take place at the following times:
Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th, and Friday 9th June: 12noon-1pm, 4pm-5pm, and 8pm-9.30pm.
Saturday 10th June: 11am-12noon, 1pm-2pm, 4pm-5pm, and 7.30pm-9.30pm.
On Sunday 11th June, Life Church Southampton will hold their morning service in the marquee from 10am, and this will be followed by a picnic and baptisms in the park from 12.30pm. As the marquee isn’t big enough for all the churches to meet together in, New Community Central will join the event for the picnic and baptisms (after our normal Sunday service at Central Hall).
How to Get Involved:
A whole host of volunteers are needed to put on this five-day event, with opportunity for individuals to use their unique gifts and skills in different serving areas. Could you take some time off work to be involved with the event? If you’re not able to do that, could you sign up to serve for just evening or weekend sessions?
Some of the roles you can sign up for are:
- Street evangelism
In particular, help is still needed with stewarding, especially in between the meetings.
To volunteer, you need to register in advance by purchasing a Volunteer Ticket. This costs £10, which goes towards administrative costs, training and a Church in the Park t-shirt. As part of the signup process, your church leader will also be contacted for a reference. You can sign up for just part of a day, a whole day or the whole event. Make sure you join the team and be part of the adventure!
Other ways you can get involved
- Pray – We recognise that although we can plan, prepare and serve, only God can change people’s hearts, so please be praying that God will work by his Spirit to transform many lives. Please pray for all those who will have the opportunity to hear the gospel during the event, that they will meet Jesus and ultimately decide to follow him, and please also pray for all the practicalities and for all the team.
- Invite friends – This event provides a great opportunity to invite family, friends and neighbours to hear the Gospel in an informal and less intimidating setting, so start thinking about who you could invite to one of the afternoon or evening meetings, or to the picnic on the Sunday.
- Share the event on social media – Start spreading the word about this great event!
- Experience ‘one church’ in Southampton – Come along to the marquee and be encouraged and inspired as we hear testimonies and worship God together.
