Early warning systems and shelters are thought to have saved an estimated 100,000 people from the immediate impacts of the cyclone. Thousands of people were killed, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced and over 50,000 people injured by flying debris and falling trees. Hundreds of thousands of livestock also perished. almost a million homes destroyed or damaged, trees ripped up and an estimated million acres of cropland were devastated on the evening of November 15th as winds of up to 155 mph tore through 15 districts in the coastal region.
Out of the 15 districts, seven, (Bagerhat, Pathuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur, Jhalakhathi, Barisal and Bhola), were severely hit as 3-5 metre tidal surges battered coastal towns and villages mainly in the south-west of the country.
